What is the difference between an account, a profile and a username?
They are related, but they are not the same thing.
The account is the provider’s underlying record.
It controls access to the service and may connect registration details, security settings, sessions, devices and activity.
The username is an identifier used to recognise or find the account.
It might also be used to sign in.
A person may be able to change their username while the underlying account remains the same.
The profile is the information presented about the account or user.
It may include a display name, photograph, biography, links, public posts or other visible details.
A profile can be public even though most of the account record is private.
Some services allow one account to control several profiles, pages or channels.
Others allow several accounts to manage the same profile or page.
This matters in an investigation.
A screenshot of a profile may show what was publicly displayed, but it may not reveal the provider’s internal account identifier or every person with access.
A username may also be reused, changed or copied by another user.
When preserving evidence, record the exact profile address, visible username, display name and any stable account identifier you can obtain.
Do not rely only on the name shown on screen.
When requesting information from a provider, make clear whether you are asking about a public profile, a username, a page or the underlying account.
Using the correct term reduces ambiguity and makes it less likely that the wrong record will be preserved or returned.
