Does an unusual-location alert prove compromise?¶
No. An unusual-location alert does not prove that a cloud account was compromised.
It shows that the provider detected access from a location or network that differed from the account’s expected pattern.
What this means in practice¶
Location is usually estimated from the IP address. VPNs, proxies, mobile networks, corporate gateways, remote access and provider routing can all make legitimate activity appear to come from somewhere unexpected.
A user may also travel, use a new device or connect through a hotel, airport or public network.
The alert is still important because it may identify activity that deserves investigation.
Start with the underlying event. Record the account, time, IP address, session, device or browser information, authentication method and whether the activity was a fresh login or an existing session.
Also test legitimate explanations. A known VPN endpoint or corporate security service may explain the location without explaining all of the account activity.
The provider’s risk score or alert wording may reflect internal rules that are not fully disclosed. Treat it as an analytical lead, not a final conclusion.
Where compromise is suspected, preserve the relevant logs and session information before making changes.

The dangerous assumption is that unfamiliar location equals attacker.
What to do next¶
Check whether the user recognises the device, application and timing, not just the city or country shown.
Look for supporting indicators such as new recovery details, unfamiliar applications, changed permissions, unusual downloads, new forwarding rules or creation of additional users.
