What is file metadata in a cloud environment?

Cloud file metadata is information the service records about a file in addition to the file’s visible content.

It may include the filename, file ID, owner, size, format, creation time, modification time, version, sharing status, permissions and application used.

What this means in practice

Some metadata is generated by the cloud provider. Some is copied from the uploaded file. Some changes when the file is synchronised, converted, previewed, moved or edited.

Investigators should identify which metadata field comes from which system.

A cloud “created” time may mean when the provider first created its record. An “uploaded” time may relate to transfer into the service. A “modified” time may reflect a later edit or automated process.

What this may show

The service may also hold hidden or internal identifiers that are more reliable than the visible filename.

Cloud metadata can help link versions, accounts, folders and events. It can also show ownership, sharing and retention status.

What this does not show on its own

The dangerous assumption is that all metadata came from the original file or device.

But metadata does not automatically prove who performed the action. The account may be shared, and applications or automated processes may alter fields.
