Could a file be uploaded automatically?

Yes. A file can be uploaded to a cloud service automatically.

Synchronisation tools, backup software, mobile applications, scanners, cameras, workflows and linked services may upload files without a user manually selecting them at that time.

What this means in practice

A photo may upload automatically when a phone reconnects. A document saved into a synced folder may transfer in the background. A backup process may upload entire directories on a schedule.

The provider may record the upload against the user account even though the action was carried out by an application or device process.

Investigators should identify the upload route. Was it a browser upload, sync client, mobile application, API, service account or automated workflow?

Also consider timing. The file may have been created or received earlier and uploaded only when the device regained a connection.

Where attribution matters, compare the cloud upload event with local device records and the behaviour of the application involved.
