Could a file be created by an application or service account?

Yes. A cloud file can be created by an application, service account or automated process.

Reports, exports, logs, backups, invoices, converted documents and generated media are common examples.

What this means in practice

An application may act using delegated permission from a user account. A service account may create files under its own identity. A workflow may generate a document when another event occurs.

Investigators should identify the application or service account, its permissions, configuration, owner and expected behaviour.

Also establish who configured or triggered the process. The automation may execute later without further human involvement.

Where authorship matters, separate the person who designed or triggered the process from the system that produced the file.
