What should corroborate cloud-file attribution?

Cloud-file attribution should be corroborated by evidence that connects the account, session, device and person to the relevant file event.

The dangerous assumption is that the account name beside a file is enough.

What this means in practice

Also establish the file route. Was it created online, uploaded from a device, synchronised automatically, copied from another user or generated by software?

The strength of attribution increases when independent sources point to the same user, device and session.

Where provider terminology is unclear, preserve the raw record and seek clarification before translating it into a statement about human behaviour. The audit label may describe a system action more narrowly than its ordinary-language wording suggests.

What this may show

Useful corroboration can include session identifiers, authentication records, device or browser information, IP addresses, application details, version history and provider audit logs.

Device evidence may show the file, sync activity, browser history, notifications, application data or local edits.

Wider evidence may include communications discussing the file, work records, CCTV, physical access, witness accounts and the user’s known activity at the relevant time.

What this does not show on its own

A cloud record may show that an account created, uploaded, edited, shared or deleted a file. It does not automatically prove which person controlled that account at the time.

Where the evidence remains incomplete, state the limitation. A cloud record may support an inference without proving personal authorship or control.

What to do next

Check whether the account was shared, compromised or used by a delegated application or service account.

Do not treat matching timestamps alone as decisive. Systems may record different stages of the same event and use different time zones.

Key takeaway

Corroborate cloud-file attribution with session, device, application and wider evidence, and distinguish the account linked to the event from the person responsible.
