Could an older version remain after deletion?

Yes. Earlier versions may survive after the live object is deleted because version, retention, backup or archive systems preserve historical states separately.

Version and object deletion may differ

Some providers move the object and all versions into deleted items. Others keep versions through a separate retention period or remove them together. An organisation's policy can change the default behaviour.

Outside the provider, collaborators' devices, exported copies and message attachments may preserve content corresponding to an older version even when no provider version remains.

Preserve object and version IDs, content, hash, timestamps, recorded editor and recovery source. A filename match alone is weak; a stable object/version relationship or matching content can show how the recovered item relates to the deleted file.

An older version may reveal wording later removed, a previous owner or a different editor. Placed alongside audit events and communications, it can provide strong evidence of sequence.

Absence has a defined scope

Failure to recover an older version may reflect retention expiry, version grouping or provider policy. It does not prove the content never existed, although a complete version return for the relevant period can test that claim.

After OneDrive object OBJ-4407 is deleted in event DEL-204, the live and recycle-bin views no longer expose earlier text. Purview retention return HOLD-88 contains version V-18, hash H-91, in which paragraph 12 is absent; Teams attachment ATT-77 has the same hash. The matching historical states can establish that V-18 existed before V-19, while their sources and coverage define what cannot be inferred about missing intermediate versions.

Prove the recovered historical state and its relationship to the deleted object
EstablishedThe object relationship and matching hashes establish the content of an identified earlier state.
Still openWhether other versions existed between V-18 and deletion and why the wording later changed.

The next useful comparison is V-18 and H-91 against the complete version manifest, retention-policy scope, audit events, later V-19, the full Teams message and any backup snapshot.

Current Microsoft retained-version example - checked 3 September 2026

Microsoft Purview retention for SharePoint and OneDrive can preserve original content in the Preservation Hold library when retained items are changed or deleted. Version treatment depends on versioning, retention configuration and whether content is a record. Current behaviour must be checked against the policy and dates in issue.

The point to remember

Deleting the live object may not erase its historical states. Search version and retention layers, then prove how any recovered content relates to the deleted object.
