Can backups retain deleted cloud data?

Yes. Backups can retain cloud data after it has been deleted from the live service.

What this means in practice

A backup may preserve the file content without preserving all of the live metadata, sharing history or audit records.

Investigators should identify who controls the backup, what data it covers, when snapshots were taken, how long they are retained and whether the relevant period is still available.
