What might a cloud login record contain?

A cloud login record may contain the account, time, IP address, device or browser information, application, authentication method, result and risk indicators.

The dangerous assumption is that every login record contains the same fields or proves the same thing.

What this means in practice

Some records describe a fresh password login. Others describe single sign-on, token refresh, application access or continuation of an existing session.

But fields may be missing, shortened or available only under a higher subscription or administrator role.

Investigators should identify the provider’s event type and definition before interpreting the record.

Where several identity systems are involved, the cloud application may record only the accepted identity assertion. The identity provider may hold the detailed password, multi-factor and device evidence.

What this may show

The record may include multi-factor method, device ID, session ID, location estimate, user agent, identity provider, failure reason and security alert.

What this does not show on its own

Do not rely only on the displayed location. It is usually derived from the IP address and may be affected by VPNs, mobile networks, proxies and corporate gateways.

A successful record proves that the system accepted the access mechanism. It does not automatically prove which person was present.

What to do next

Check the time zone, event ID, account ID, tenant, application and whether the event succeeded.

Compare the login with session creation, later activity, trusted devices, application consent and relevant device evidence.

Preserve the raw export where possible because the user interface may omit technical fields or change how historical events are displayed.
