What does a failed cloud login prove?

A failed cloud login proves that the service rejected an attempted authentication event.

It does not automatically prove who made the attempt or why it failed.

What this means in practice

Failures may result from an incorrect password, expired credential, disabled account, mistyped username, blocked location, failed multi-factor step, application error or old saved credentials.

An automated device or application may repeatedly attempt to connect using outdated information.

Investigators should identify the account, failure reason, IP address, device or browser information, application, time and whether the provider applied a risk or security rule.

A pattern across many accounts may suggest password spraying or automated probing. Repeated failures against one account may have a different explanation.

Where the event matters, preserve the raw failure code and provider definition. User-facing wording may simplify the technical reason.

Use failed-login evidence as part of a timeline rather than as a complete attribution.

Where the failure reason changes across attempts, preserve the sequence. A move from unknown user to incorrect password to successful access may reveal more than the total number of failures alone.
