What does a failed cloud login prove?¶
It proves that the service rejected a recorded authentication attempt for a stated reason. The failure code and surrounding sequence can distinguish a mistyped password, stale software and a broader attack pattern; the count alone cannot identify the operator or prove hostile intent.
Different failures mean different things¶
At 02:13, Microsoft Entra records failure SIGN-5512 for Dave's account from client LegacyMailSync, IP address 203.0.113.42, with error code 50126 and no session created. Similar failures repeat hourly from the same client. That pattern supports a stale saved credential more strongly than repeated interactive guesses.
Possible causes include an unknown account, incorrect or expired password, failed MFA, disabled account, blocked risk rule, old application credential or malformed request. Preserve the raw provider code because user-facing wording may simplify it.
An application can retry stale credentials without a person present. Repeated failures across many accounts may fit password spraying; repeated attempts against one account can reflect a mistyped password or misconfigured client.
Read the sequence¶
Changes in outcome can be significant: unknown user, then correct username with wrong password, followed by successful access and account changes describes a different pattern from a scheduled client failing every hour.
Record account, application or client, connection address, time, failure reason, risk response and related successful login, reset, recovery or lockout events. Compare the raw failures with the client's schedule, Dave's device records and any later successful login route.
Microsoft Entra failure detail - checked 3 September 2026
Microsoft Entra sign-in details include a status and failure reason, with additional error information for troubleshooting. Its logs separate interactive and non-interactive sign-ins, which matters when repeated attempts may be generated by software rather than a person.
Attribute cautiously but positively¶
The source address and client can define a useful line of enquiry. They do not alone identify the operator, particularly through shared networks or intermediaries.
The point to remember
A failed login establishes rejection for a defined reason. Use the failure sequence, client and surrounding events to distinguish error, automation and attempted intrusion.
