What might a cloud IP record show?

A cloud IP record may show the internet address associated with a login, session, request or other service event.

It can help identify the connection used to reach the provider.

What this means in practice

An IP address identifies a connection point at a particular time. It may belong to a home router, mobile network, workplace, VPN, proxy, cloud host or shared gateway.

The same account may use several IP addresses during one session. Mobile devices, roaming, network changes and provider routing can all alter the address while the user remains logged in.

Investigators should record the full IP address, event time, time zone, account, session, application, event type and provider source.

Also establish whether the provider recorded the originating address or only an intermediate service, security gateway or load balancer.

Where an address may be shared by many users, exact time and any available source-port information become especially important. Without them, later subscriber or organisational enquiries may be unable to distinguish the relevant connection.

What this does not show on its own

The dangerous assumption is that the IP address identifies the person responsible.

Do not rely only on the provider’s displayed city or country. That location is usually estimated and may be wrong or misleading.

An address linked to a VPN or proxy does not make the event worthless. It changes the next enquiry and the limits of attribution.

Check whether the address is IPv4 or IPv6 and whether a source port or other connection detail is available.

Compare the IP record with session activity, device evidence, other provider logs and subscriber or organisational records where lawful and proportionate.
