Does cloud geolocation prove where the user was?¶
No. It is normally a provider or database estimate derived from the observed IP address. It may describe network registration or exit infrastructure rather than the device's physical position.
Why the displayed place can differ¶
Mobile routing, corporate gateways, VPNs, proxies and security services can place the apparent connection elsewhere. Databases can be outdated, and provider interfaces may round the result to a city or country.
Preserve both the original IP address and displayed label. The label may change when databases update while the recorded address remains stable evidence of the observed connection.
Use location as context¶
An unexpected country or network can be a useful indicator, particularly alongside a new client or suspicious session. It is not proof that a user travelled there.
Where physical location matters, compare device location records, mobile/network evidence, access control, travel, CCTV and other independent sources.
The point to remember
Cloud geolocation estimates the network location behind an event. Use it as context and corroborate the user's actual whereabouts independently.
