What is a device identifier in a cloud record?¶
It is a provider- or identity-system value used to distinguish a registered device, browser/app installation or managed endpoint. Its meaning and stability depend on the system that issued it.
Find what the identifier represents¶
It may relate to physical hardware, device enrolment, an app installation or a browser record. Reinstallation, reset, restore or re-enrolment can create a new value for the same device; some technical values can be reused or shared.
Preserve the exact ID, issuing system, account, session, application, time and associated trust, compliance or management fields. Historical enrolment/removal records may connect an ID no longer shown in the current device list.
Link to the physical device¶
Compare it with device-management records, application databases, browser profiles and forensic artefacts. A match can strongly associate a provider event with a device record while possession and use remain separate questions.
The point to remember
A cloud device ID identifies whatever record the issuing system defines. Establish that definition and history before treating it as permanent hardware or personal attribution.
