Can browser information identify the device used?¶

It can support a device link, but a generic browser and operating-system description rarely identifies one device. Stronger association comes from the browser profile, session and provider/device identifiers together.

Separate common attributes from persistent state¶

Browser type, version, language and user agent are widely shared and can change during updates. Cookies, remembered-browser IDs, profile databases and session values may be more specific, although resets, private browsing and synchronised profiles affect them.

A matching profile on two devices does not prove which produced an earlier event. Profile synchronisation can copy bookmarks, extensions and account state.

Compare both sides¶

At provider level, preserve session, browser and device fields. On the device, compare profile paths, cookies, history, application databases and timestamps. Managed-device records can add a separate link.

Describe partial evidence as consistent with the device. Reserve positive identification for a combination that genuinely distinguishes it.
