What can cloud records prove about a device?¶

Cloud records may show that activity was associated with a provider-defined device, browser, application or trusted-device record.

Evidential caution: that this always identifies one physical device conclusively.

What this means¶

A cloud service may record a device ID, operating system, browser, user agent, application, managed status or trust state.

Those details can help distinguish access routes and link related sessions.

But identifiers can be reset, regenerated, shared across applications or tied to a browser profile rather than the hardware.

A device may also be shared, stolen, remotely controlled or used by another person.

A stronger device link may come from matching several stable fields, session artefacts and local application records.

Current device lists may exclude devices removed after the event. Historical login, enrolment and trust records may therefore be more important than the present account settings.

Where the cloud record and physical device disagree, preserve both explanations. The identifier may have changed, the device may have been restored or the event may belong to another device using the same profile.

What to check or do next¶

• Investigators should establish what the provider’s device field actually represents.
• Compare it with mobile-device management records, trusted-device history, browser profiles, application data and forensic device evidence.
• Do not treat a generic browser and operating-system match as unique identification.
• Use careful language. State that the cloud event is associated with a provider-defined device record and explain the evidence linking that record to the physical device examined.

Evidential limits¶

Even then, device attribution does not equal personal attribution.
