How should I explain cloud evidence in a report?¶

Explain cloud evidence in a report by starting with the investigative issue and then describing the relevant technical records in plain, precise language.

Evidential caution: that copying provider terminology into the report makes the conclusion accurate.

What this means¶

Explain what the provider recorded and what that event means within the service.

Then state the limitation.

Where several records support the conclusion, explain how they connect.

Separate fact from interpretation.

A useful structure is: record, meaning, limitation and corroboration.

Avoid phrases such as “the cloud proves” or “the system confirms” unless the evidence genuinely supports that level of certainty.

Where there are gaps, state them.

Where a specialist opinion was required, explain the question asked and the basis of that opinion.

Where technical identifiers are included, provide enough context for the reader to understand their role. An unexplained string adds little unless it links specific records or resources.

What to check or do next¶

• Identify the provider, service, account, tenant, event type, time and source record.
• Use event, session, application and resource identifiers where they matter, but do not overload the report with unexplained fields.

Evidential limits¶

An account event does not automatically identify the person. An IP address identifies a connection. A device identifier may represent a browser or application installation. A location may be estimated.

Where the report relies on a provider export, identify the collection method, filters and limitations. This allows the reader to assess whether the record set was complete for the question addressed.
