How do I identify which device was linked to cloud activity?¶

Identify the device by comparing provider device records with local device artefacts, session information and organisational device-management data.

Evidential caution: that a device label in a cloud log uniquely identifies the physical device.

What this means¶

The provider may record a browser, app installation, trusted-device entry or managed-device object rather than the hardware itself.

A matching browser and operating system is only consistency, not uniqueness.

Stronger linkage may come from stable device identifiers, session cookies, application IDs and local records matching the same account activity.

Remember that devices can be renamed, reset, restored or re-enrolled.

A changed identifier may still belong to the same hardware, while the same generic label may apply to several devices.

Where personal attribution matters, add physical possession, access, communications and other wider evidence.

What to check or do next¶

• Start with the device ID, user agent, operating system, application, session and time.
• Check trusted-device history, mobile-device management records, browser profiles, app databases, local tokens and synchronisation logs.

Evidential limits¶

Even a strong device link does not prove who was using it.

Historical device records may be essential where the current account no longer lists the device. Removal after the event does not remove its earlier relevance.

Where the device may have been remotely accessed, examine remote-management records, active sessions and user activity. A cloud event linked to the device does not establish that the person physically handled it.
