What is remote command execution?¶

Remote command execution means causing a system to run an instruction through a remote mechanism. The mechanism might be legitimate administration, malicious software or exploitation of a vulnerable service; the term does not imply an interactive human session.

Commands can arrive through remote shells, RMM platforms, web shells, cloud-management tools, deployment systems, APIs or malware. An automated job can issue hundreds of commands without someone typing them at the time.

Follow command delivery into execution¶

Identify the control channel and the account or service that authorised it. Preserve the exact command, target, time, job or session identifier and any recorded result. On the endpoint, connect that event to the executing process, security context, child processes and resulting files or configuration changes.

The command text alone shows an instruction, not success. It may have failed, lacked permission or been blocked. Process records and observable effects test whether the target actually carried it out.

Upstream evidence is equally important. If a deployment or orchestration platform sent the command, its job definition, operator, approval and audit records may explain why local activity appears to come from a trusted system account.

Attribute the mechanism before the person¶

The same command can be maintenance in one context and malicious in another. Timing, target, authority and outcome determine its meaning. A source address may identify a relay or management server rather than the controller.

First report that the command came through the evidenced mechanism and executed under the evidenced context. Personal attribution can then use operator authentication, account control, communications and other corroboration. Preserve both control-channel and endpoint evidence before remediation breaks their shared identifiers.
