Cyber Incidents & Offender Methods Technical Explainer

What is timestamp manipulation?

Timestamp manipulation deliberately changes recorded times to hide or misplace activity. An unusual date is not enough because copying, extraction, synchronisation, restoration and clock behaviour can produce legitimate differences.

Correlate independent clocks and events

Compare creation, modification and access fields with process, download, transfer, archive, application and security records. Preserve original zones, clock source and drift.

A newly copied file can retain an old modification time. Archive extraction and different filesystems may preserve or replace different fields. Record the movement method and source and destination storage before labelling a date false.

Identify the mechanism

Look for timestamp commands or tools, selected metadata inconsistencies and impossible sequences. A system clock change may affect many records; direct file manipulation may affect a narrow set.

Automation or inherited archive metadata can create alterations without the account holder's deliberate action. Report the supported mechanism and keep personal attribution separate.

Key takeaway

Infer timestamp manipulation from a corroborated impossible sequence and alteration mechanism, not from one surprising file date.
