Cyber Incidents & Offender Methods Technical Explainer

What is a residential proxy network?

A residential proxy network routes customer traffic through consumer internet connections or devices. A residential IP therefore proves an exit point, not that the offender lived at or controlled the household.

Separate exit, service and customer

Identify proxy provider or software, whether the exit owner consented, customer account, exact timestamp, port, session and payment or control-panel activity. Providers may assign one exit to different customers over time, making precision essential.

Subscriber records without matching proxy-session data identify only the connection used as an exit.

Examine participation and control

The exit device may contain consensual proxy software, bundled software or malware. That proves the mechanism but not the owner's knowledge.

Correlating customer authentication and payment with the exit session can link traffic to a service account. Geolocation and household subscriber data remain insufficient for personal attribution; household, proxy provider, customer and controller are distinct layers.

Key takeaway

Treat residential IPs as proxy exits and use precise session, provider and customer records to separate the household from the actual controller.
