Email Evidence Technical Explainer

Can I tell whether the recipient opened or read the email?

Sometimes records support delivery, display or mailbox access. They rarely prove that a particular person read, understood or remembered the message. Those are distinct stages.

Each signal records a different technical event

A message trace can show acceptance or delivery. A read receipt records a Message Disposition Notification or product-specific response, which may be optional, automated or triggered by a client marking the item read. A tracking pixel records a request for remote content; privacy relays, security scanners and preview services can make that request, while a human can read with images blocked.

Mailbox audit may identify access, synchronisation or application interaction with an item. Shared mailboxes, delegates, background sync, preview panes and compromised sessions still affect who or what caused it.

Corroborate technical access with human knowledge

Preserve delivery trace, receipt, tracking URL and server record, mailbox audit, account, session, client and device identifiers. Product definitions should establish whether the event means synchronised, displayed, previewed or opened.

A reply, attachment use, link follow, later action or communication revealing knowledge can support human reading. Report each supported stage instead of translating an “opened” label directly into awareness.

The point to remember

Delivery, remote-content loading and mailbox access can be evidenced; human reading and understanding normally require corroboration.
