What is the difference between From, Reply-To and Return-Path?¶
From presents an author identity, Reply-To directs a normal human reply, and Return-Path records the envelope return address used for delivery failures. The fields perform different jobs and may legitimately differ.
Different systems need different addresses¶
A newsletter can display an organisation in From, direct replies to support and use a platform bounce address in Return-Path. Ticketing and mailing systems similarly route responses and delivery reports through specialised addresses.
Differences can still reveal useful anomalies: a familiar From with an unrelated free-mail Reply-To, or a platform Return-Path that identifies the actual delivery service.
Compare roles rather than searching for one “real sender”¶
Preserve the native header and exact domains, then compare trusted routing, authentication, Message-ID and known organisational arrangements. Return-Path is not automatically the human sender, and a differing Reply-To is not automatically fraudulent. Matching fields do not prove personal authorship either.
Report each observation by role, then use provider, account and session records to establish which service or person caused the message.

The point to remember
From, Reply-To and Return-Path describe presentation, reply routing and delivery handling - not three interchangeable sender identities.
