Could opening a message create a read receipt?¶

Yes. Many messaging services can notify the sender that a message has been opened or viewed.

Avoid this assumption: Opening a message affects only the investigator’s screen. The sender may receive a tick, timestamp, status change or other indication.

A read receipt can alert another user that the account or device is active.

That may prompt deletion, contact, intimidation, movement to another service or further offending.

Before opening, record the message preview, sender, conversation, time, account and device state.

Do not rely on local read-receipt settings. Different services, group chats and linked devices may behave differently.

Some platforms mark content as read when the notification is expanded, the conversation previewed or another linked device opens it.

If the message must be opened for safety or operational reasons, record why and capture the resulting status change.

Do not assume the absence of a visible receipt means no provider event was created.
