What should I do with a memory card?¶

A memory card should be preserved as a small, easily lost digital-evidence item.

Avoid this assumption: A memory card can be inserted into any phone, camera or reader to see what is on it. The receiving device may create folders, update metadata, repair the file system or begin automatic import.

Record where the card was found, its position, container, associated device and who had possession or control.

Photograph the card and packaging before handling where practicable.

Capture the card type, capacity, brand, serial or identifying markings, adapter and write-protection switch where present.

Do not insert it into an ordinary reader or compatible device.

Do not move the write-protection tab merely to test it.

If the card is already inside a phone, camera, drone or other device, record the complete system as found before removal.

Removing it may interrupt recording, corrupt active data or change the device state.

Seek specialist advice where the host device is powered on, damaged, encrypted or actively recording.
