What should I do with a cryptocurrency hardware wallet?

A cryptocurrency hardware wallet should be treated as a specialist digital-evidence device that may control access to valuable assets.

Avoid this assumption: It is simply a storage device containing cryptocurrency. The assets are recorded on a blockchain, while the wallet may store private keys, authentication material and account information needed to control them.

Record where the device was found, who possessed it and what phones, computers, notes, cables or packaging were nearby.

Photograph the wallet, screen, buttons, model, serial number, connection type, power state and any visible account or balance information.

Do not connect it to a computer or phone.

Do not press buttons, enter a PIN, approve a transaction, update firmware or attempt to view balances.

Repeated PIN attempts or incorrect handling may lock, reset or wipe the device.

If the wallet is already connected and unlocked, preserve the visible state and seek specialist support immediately. Record the host device, application, account, network connection and any pending transaction.

Look for associated recovery phrases, seed words, PIN records, passphrases, cards or metal backups, but handle them as highly sensitive evidence.

Do not photograph or copy recovery material into personal notes or ordinary systems.

Consider asset-preservation and legal-authority issues separately from evidence handling. Moving funds is not a routine first-response action.

Do not assume possession proves ownership or control of the cryptocurrency.

Maintain strict continuity and restrict unnecessary access to the device and recovery material.

Operational takeaway

Preserve a cryptocurrency hardware wallet, its connected state and any recovery material without entering credentials, approving actions or moving assets, and obtain specialist support immediately.
