Could a peripheral contain its own logs or storage?

Yes. A peripheral may contain its own storage, logs, configuration and user activity.

Avoid this assumption: All relevant evidence will be found on the connected computer. Printers, scanners, cameras, keyboards, docking stations, displays, audio devices and other peripherals may retain data independently.

Possible records include recent jobs, paired devices, network settings, user accounts, timestamps, cached documents, firmware information, error logs and access history.

Record the peripheral’s make, model, serial number, asset tag, power state, display, ports and connections.

Photograph it as found and preserve any removable media, internal labels or attached adapters.

Do not connect the peripheral to another system, reset it, update firmware or clear settings merely to inspect it.

If a control panel or management page is already visible, record the original display before navigating.

Consider whether the peripheral is networked, cloud-managed or shared by several users.

A device may continue operating or synchronising after the main computer is disconnected.

Where the peripheral is powered, record activity lights, current jobs, warnings and time before changing power state.

Do not assume the absence of a visible storage slot means the device has no internal memory.

Where relevant evidence may be stored internally, seek specialist support before dismantling, imaging or extraction.

Keep access capability separate from attribution. A log may identify an account, device or job, not necessarily the person responsible.
