What should I consider with a laptop?¶

A laptop combines battery power, lid-controlled state changes, wireless connections and often encryption, so moving or closing it can alter access without removing power.

Preserve its portable live state¶

Record whether the lid is open, the screen locked, the battery charging and any Wi-Fi, mobile, Bluetooth or VPN connection visible. Photograph ports, cables, dock, external storage, applications and accounts.

Closing the lid or pressing power can trigger sleep, hibernation or lock. Removing the charger may simply transfer the system to battery. Conversely, attaching power may create a data-capable connection or system event.

An unlocked laptop may hold memory, sessions, unsaved work and encryption keys that disappear after restart or battery failure. Remote desktops, virtual machines and cloud services may mean it is only an access point to records held elsewhere.

Balance access, connectivity and safety¶

Avoid changing lid position, power or networks until the likely effect is understood. Seek prompt specialist advice where the live state could matter and record any action needed to manage battery or remote risk.

If the device is damaged, overheating or electrically unsafe, protect people first and document the condition and intervention. Portability does not make the equipment a self-contained or low-risk exhibit.
