First Response & Preservation Operational Explainer

Could checking the battery level change the evidence?

Yes.

Waking a phone, opening controls or entering settings just to obtain an exact percentage can change the current state.

The useful rule
Use battery information already visible unless greater precision genuinely changes the handling decision.

The visible battery state may already be enough

Useful observations include:

  • battery icon;
  • low-power warning;
  • charging indicator;
  • visible percentage; and
  • whether the device appears close to shutdown.
Example observation
Battery icon: redVisible warning: 10% remainingCharging: noScreen: unlocked

That may be enough to justify urgent power planning.

Precision can cost more than it adds

Opening settings may:

  • expose notifications;
  • change the foreground app;
  • trigger sync;
  • update recent activity; or
  • consume more power.

Repeatedly waking the device can also drain the battery faster.

Why battery matters

Uncontrolled shutdown may:

  • lock the device;
  • remove volatile state;
  • end sessions; or
  • re-engage stronger encryption controls.

Should I connect a phone to a charger? covers the next decision.

The practical point is: observe battery rather than exploring for battery. Get enough information to make the handling decision, then stop.
