Could a phone receive new messages while being preserved?¶
Yes.
If the phone remains connected, it can continue receiving calls, messages, notifications and account changes after you take control of it.
Why this matters
Separate the state you first observed from anything that arrives later during preservation.
Later arrivals can change the visible picture¶
New activity may:
- reorder conversations;
- change unread counts;
- wake the screen;
- change call history;
- add voicemail;
- alter notifications; or
- trigger cloud updates.
A simple handling timeline may look like:
10:12Phone first photographed.
10:18New messaging notification appears.
10:23Incoming call received.
Those later events should not be confused with the original state.
Do not open content simply to inspect it¶
Opening a message may:
- mark it read;
- send a read receipt;
- trigger disappearing-content behaviour; or
- change conversation ordering.
Record what is already visible.
Arrival time is not necessarily creation time¶
A message delivered during preservation may have been:
- sent earlier;
- delayed by connectivity;
- queued by the provider; or
- synchronised from another device.
Provider records may be needed to separate creation, sending and delivery.
The practical point is: preservation is an active period. Keep a timeline of everything that arrives after control is taken.
