First Response & Preservation Technical Explainer

Could biometric access be lost?

Yes.

A phone that currently accepts fingerprint or face access may later require the full passcode instead.

The key point
Biometric availability is a temporary technical condition, not a guaranteed future access route.

What can remove biometric access?

Examples include:

  • restart;
  • power loss;
  • timeout or security policy;
  • remote lock;
  • failed attempts; and
  • some changes in device state.
09:10Phone accepts face unlock.
09:22Phone restarts after battery loss.
09:23Device now requires full passcode.

Preserve the current state

Record:

  • whether the phone is unlocked;
  • security warning;
  • battery;
  • power state; and
  • any visible indication that biometric access is available.

Avoid unnecessary restart, button presses and preventable shutdown.

Do not repeatedly test biometrics

Repeated failed attempts may reduce remaining opportunities or trigger stronger controls.

And biometric availability does not itself authorise examination.

The practical point is: record the live access state promptly and avoid actions that may return the phone to full passcode protection.
