Could opening a message create a read receipt?¶

Yes. A sender may receive a view status, timestamp or other indicator when content is opened, previewed or synchronised through a linked device.

Receipt behaviour varies by platform¶

Local settings may not control group chats, linked devices or service-side events. Receipts can be immediate or delayed until reconnection.

Record sender, preview, unread state, conversation, account and device before access. The absence of a visible receipt on the examined device does not prove no provider event occurred.

Access can change offender behaviour¶

A receipt may prompt deletion, intimidation or migration to another service. Seek platform advice where covert handling matters.

If safety requires opening, record the reason and resulting status. Preserve whether the message was already partially previewed or open because that changes interpretation.
