What does an account-holder result actually establish?¶

It establishes that a service associates an account with particular registration or customer details. That is a lead about the account, not automatic proof of the person who performed the event.

Account holder, account user and responsible person are different propositions.

Why the name may not settle the question¶

Details can be false, stale or entered for somebody else. An account may be shared by a family, team or administrator; credentials may be stolen; access may be automated; or several devices may use it.

Payment information can strengthen a connection, but payer, account holder and operator may still be different people.

Build from the account to its use¶

Compare the account result with access logs, session times, source addresses, recovery details, device records, communications and other independent evidence. Ask who could control the account at the relevant time and whether an innocent or compromised-use explanation remains.

Safe wording¶

The provider’s records associate the account with the named registration details. Further evidence is required to establish who controlled the account and performed the recorded activity.
