What is an email-security log?

An email-security log records how an email platform or security gateway handled messages and related threats.

It may cover message receipt, scanning, filtering, quarantine, delivery, rejection, link checking, attachment analysis and user reporting.

Avoid this assumption: That an email-security entry proves either that a message was malicious or that the recipient read and acted on it. It does not.

A security system may classify a message using reputation, signatures, content rules, sandbox analysis, threat intelligence or machine-learning scores. Those methods can be useful, but they remain detections and decisions made by a product.

The log may contain sender and recipient addresses, message ID, subject, source IP, delivery action, verdict, rule name, attachment details, URLs and timestamps. This can help trace how a message entered the environment and whether it was delivered, blocked or quarantined.

But “delivered” may mean accepted by a mailbox, not opened by a person. “Clicked” may refer to a security scanner testing a link. A malicious verdict may later be changed, and a clean verdict does not prove the message was harmless.

Investigators should identify the product and exact stage represented by the record. Ask whether the event came from a gateway, cloud mailbox, endpoint client or link-protection service. Obtain the original message where lawfully available, including headers, attachment hashes and message identifiers.

Preserve the underlying records, rule or detection details and any later reclassification. Correlate delivery with mailbox audit, authentication, endpoint, browser and network evidence before concluding that a user opened, clicked or executed anything.
