What is a system-generated event?¶

A system-generated event is created automatically by an operating system, service, application or device as part of its normal operation.

No person needs to perform a specific action at the moment the event is written.

Avoid this assumption: That an event appearing during a user session must have been deliberately generated by that user. It may have been entirely automatic.

Examples include service startup, software updates, health checks, token renewal, cache clearing, network reconnection, file indexing and scheduled maintenance. Security controls may also create events when they scan, block or quarantine activity.

A system-generated event can still be important. It may show that a device restarted, a process launched, a policy applied or a connection was attempted. It may help explain why later user or application events occurred.

But the account field can be misleading. The system may run the process under a local system account, service account or the currently logged-in user’s context. That does not mean the named person initiated it.

Investigators should identify the event source, process, service and normal trigger. Ask whether the event occurs at startup, on a schedule, after another event or in response to a system condition.

Preserve surrounding entries, process ancestry, task settings and configuration where relevant. Compare repeated occurrences across other devices or normal periods. Routine repetition may help distinguish standard system behaviour from unusual activity.

Do not dismiss automatic events as irrelevant. They may establish sequence, explain artefacts or identify the mechanism behind an incident. But do not convert them into evidence of human action without support.
