Could background synchronisation generate log activity?

Yes. Background synchronisation can generate log activity even when the user is not actively using the application or device.

This is common with cloud storage, email, messaging, contacts, calendars and device backups.

Avoid this assumption: That a recorded upload, download or connection proves that a person deliberately initiated it at that moment. It may have occurred automatically.

Synchronisation services compare local and remote data and transfer changes as needed. They may run at startup, when a network becomes available, at regular intervals or after another device changes the account.

A file accessed on one device may cause a second device to download it later. An email read in a browser may trigger mailbox updates on a phone. A device reconnecting after being offline may upload a backlog of events together.

Logs may therefore show account access, file transfer, token refresh, network connections and application activity without direct interaction at the recorded time.

Investigators should identify the synchronisation service, configured account, devices involved and normal trigger behaviour. Ask whether the event represents detection of a change, queueing, transfer start or successful completion.

Preserve client, cloud, network and application records where available. Look for batch patterns, repeated intervals, device wake events and delayed uploads.

Do not assume automatic synchronisation makes the evidence irrelevant. It may still show that data reached a device or account. But it does not automatically prove that the user saw, opened or intentionally transferred it.
