Could several alerts relate to the same underlying event?

Yes. Several alerts can relate to the same underlying event or sequence.

Different rules may detect different aspects of one activity.

Avoid the dangerous assumption

The dangerous assumption is that ten alerts necessarily mean ten separate incidents or ten separate offender actions.

They may all arise from one technical event.

A suspicious login could trigger a new-device alert, impossible-travel alert, risk-score alert and account-takeover correlation. One malicious file might generate antivirus, endpoint, network and cloud alerts.

Repeated processing can also create duplicates. The same source event may be ingested twice, re-evaluated after a rule update or copied into several incident queues.

Multiple alerts can strengthen understanding by showing how different controls observed the activity. But counting alerts without deduplication can exaggerate scale.

Investigators should identify the source-event IDs, correlation IDs, accounts, devices and time windows behind each alert. Ask whether the platform groups, suppresses or duplicates related detections.

Build the analysis from the underlying events rather than the number of alert cards. Determine whether the alerts represent one event, several stages, repeated attempts or genuinely separate activity.

Check whether different alerts were generated from the same imported detection, threat-intelligence match or normalised source record. This prevents the same observation being counted repeatedly as independent support.

Preserve the relationships between alerts and any incident or case record created by the security platform.

Do not discard duplicates without checking whether one alert contains additional source records or later context.
