Does a device name in a log identify the physical device?¶

Not reliably. A device name is a label that may be changed, duplicated, reused or assigned to a virtual system, and the field may describe a reporting or intermediary host rather than the origin.

Friendly labels can conceal stronger identifiers¶

Users, organisations and automated deployment create names. Dashboards may resolve a stable ID to the latest name. Proxies, management servers, remote desktops, containers and cloud instances can appear in device fields depending on log design.

Reconcile identity across systems¶

Establish what the field represents and how names are generated. Seek serial, asset, hardware, certificate, management, instance or GUID identifiers and compare asset inventory, enrolment, network logs, possession and forensic examination.

Preserve name-change and reassignment history. Use the name as a lead and attribute the physical or virtual endpoint through stable identifiers.
