What is a raw log?¶

A raw log is the closest available record to what the source system created before another tool reformatted, normalised, enriched or summarised it. “Raw” does not guarantee completeness or integrity.

Source detail survives in native fields¶

Text, binary, database or event-stream records may retain original names, codes, ordering and identifiers lost downstream. They still reflect configured logging, rollover, collection gaps and the selected export period, and vendor formats may need specialist interpretation.

Preserve source and production details¶

Record exact system and version, collection method, period, supplier and any filter. Retain the original without editing and analyse copies. Obtain code and field guidance and configuration.

Compare dashboard or report representations with the raw event when detailed meaning matters.
