Could a SIEM change how an event is displayed?¶
Yes. A SIEM can rename, parse, normalise, enrich, time-convert and correlate source records while leaving the underlying event unchanged.
Display fields may be SIEM conclusions¶
A “successful login” label can be a parser's translation of a vendor code. Severity, username, endpoint and location may be added from current directories or enrichments. One row can group several events, empty fields may be hidden and the default time may be ingestion rather than source time.
Trace important fields to origin¶
Identify source product, connector, parser and versions, field mappings, enrichment and whether the row represents one or several events. Preserve the underlying record, dashboard capture and export settings.
Report explicitly when a conclusion depends on a SIEM-derived field and verify material meaning against source data.
The point to remember
A SIEM improves cross-source analysis but its presentation must be traced back to source records and processing rules.
