What is log parsing?¶
Log parsing separates a source record into searchable fields. The resulting structure reflects rules and mappings, not a neutral character-for-character copy.
Parsers interpret vendor formats¶
They identify field boundaries, decode event codes, convert statuses and map values into common schemas. Unknown fields may be dropped, several meanings grouped and a format update misread by an older parser. Added action or severity labels may be inferred.
Verify significant parsed values¶
Record parsing platform, parser and version, field map and reported errors. Preserve the raw event beside parsed output and compare surprising, blank or attribution-critical fields directly.
A blank parsed value may mean recognition failure rather than source absence. Use parsed fields for scalable search and source fields for precise technical conclusions.
The point to remember
Parsing makes logs usable at scale, but every material field inherits the parser's assumptions and possible errors.
