What is a request ID or trace ID?¶
A request or trace ID follows an operation through one or more application and cloud components. It can reconstruct a technical route without proving human initiation or successful completion.
Trace and span scopes differ¶
A wider trace may contain request or span IDs for permission checks, data retrieval, API calls and response. Product terminology varies and retries can create new requests within one trace. Browsers, scripts, services, APIs and compromised sessions can all originate activity.
Reconstruct each component's action¶
Establish creator, scope, uniqueness, retention and expected propagation. Preserve account, session, address, time, status and outcome fields for each linked record.
Use the ID to locate related events, then verify what each component attempted and completed rather than inferring a uniform result.
The point to remember
Request and trace IDs reveal an operation's path; component records and context reveal its outcome and initiator.
