Does the sender name identify the sender?¶

A message may display a person’s name at the top of the conversation or beside the content.

Evidential caution: that the displayed sender name is a verified identity.

What this means¶

In many messaging applications, the visible name comes from the recipient’s own contacts. If someone saves a telephone number as “John Smith”, the application may display “John Smith” even though the service has not verified that identity.

Other services use a display name chosen by the account holder. Display names may be changed, copied, misspelled or deliberately made similar to another user. Several accounts may use identical or near-identical names.

Some services display usernames as well as names. A username may be more useful because it can identify a particular account within the service, but usernames can sometimes change. A stable internal account or user ID may provide stronger continuity.

The name shown in a screenshot may therefore describe how the account appeared on that device, not who controlled it.

Then test attribution separately. Relevant evidence may include registration information, account recovery details, linked devices, login records, subscriber records, device possession and surrounding communications.

This distinction matters particularly where contact names have been changed, accounts impersonate others or screenshots are the only material available.

What to check or do next¶

• Preserve more than the name. Record the telephone number, username, profile link, account ID, service-specific user ID, group role and any message identifiers available. Capture the account profile and conversation context where this can be done safely and lawfully.

Evidential limits¶

Be cautious when reporting. It may be accurate to say, “The conversation displayed the contact name John Smith.” It may not be accurate to say, “John Smith sent the message,” unless the attribution evidence supports that conclusion.
