What are the main limitations of a messaging screenshot?¶

You may have a clear screenshot showing names, messages and times. That can look complete and convincing.

Evidential caution: that a clear screenshot is necessarily a complete and authentic record.

What this means¶

A screenshot normally captures only the visible portion of a conversation. It may exclude earlier messages, later messages, attachments, reactions, edit history, call events, group changes and system notices. The missing material may change the meaning of what remains.

Visible times may also be misleading. The application may show local device time, relative labels such as “yesterday”, or only partial dates. A cropped screenshot may remove the surrounding information needed to interpret them.

The image may have been edited, assembled from several captures or passed through applications that strip file information. Even an unaltered screenshot can present a misleading account if messages were removed before it was taken.

A screenshot also tells you little about how the message arrived. It may show a genuine conversation, a notification preview, a quoted message, a forwarded item or content displayed on a cloned or linked device.

What to check or do next¶

• Preserve the uncropped original where available. Record the source, capture circumstances and device. Ask whether the original conversation is still accessible and whether a screen recording, export or forensic acquisition can preserve more context.

Evidential limits¶

The displayed name may be a locally saved contact label. A profile image may be old, copied or unrelated to the actual controller of the account. The screenshot may not show the telephone number, username or stable service identifier needed to distinguish one account from another.

Do not reject screenshots merely because they have limitations. Use them as one evidential source and test important details against other records.
