Does a chat export contain the complete conversation?¶
A chat export may run to hundreds of pages and appear comprehensive.
Evidential caution: that length and structure prove completeness.
What this means¶
Some exports omit reactions, edits, calls, attachments, read states, delivery events, group changes and system-generated notices. Others include placeholders rather than the media itself.
The export may also reflect only one participant’s view. The other participant may retain messages or attachments no longer visible to the exporting account.
Where completeness matters, compare the export with the live conversation, source-device data, screenshots, notifications, another participant’s records or provider-held metadata.
Describe it carefully. “The export contained the following messages” is usually safer than “This is the complete conversation” unless completeness has been established through the method and corroborating evidence.
What to check or do next¶
- Check the export settings and the service involved. Was media included? Was a particular date range selected? Did the application produce one conversation or an account-wide archive? Were encrypted backups involved?
- Preserve the original export and any associated files. Record the account, device, application version where available, export date, time zone and person who created it.
Evidential limits¶
An export normally contains the material that the service allows the exporting account to retrieve at that time. That may not be the same as the full historical conversation.
Messages deleted before export may be absent. Disappearing messages may already have expired. A user may have cleared part of the conversation locally. Content available on another linked device may not be included.
Examine internal sequence and continuity. Missing dates, abrupt changes, references to unseen messages and replies to absent content may indicate gaps. But absence of an obvious gap does not prove that nothing was removed.
Operational takeaway
Treat a chat export as the material made available to that account through that export process, and test completeness rather than assuming it.
