What does “delivered” mean on a messaging service?¶

A message may show as delivered, often with a second tick, changed icon or status label.

Evidential caution: that delivery proves the intended person personally received the message.

What this means¶

Delivered normally means the service recorded the message reaching a destination defined by that service. That destination may be the recipient account, one device, several linked devices or a provider-controlled delivery point.

The meaning is service-specific. On one platform, delivery may require a recipient device to connect. On another, it may mean the message reached the account infrastructure even if the user has not opened the application.

A linked computer or tablet may have received the message while the phone was elsewhere. A shared or compromised account may have been active. A device may have received the data while unattended.

Delivery times also require care. The displayed time may be when the service recorded delivery, when a device synchronised or when the interface refreshed. Different records may therefore show different but legitimate times.

Delivery is often useful corroboration. It is not the final step in proving personal awareness.

What to check or do next¶

• Preserve the status, time, time zone, service and any device or account context. Where possible, compare the sender-side indicator with recipient-side records, notifications, device data or provider events.
• Use reporting language that matches the evidence. “The service recorded delivery to the recipient account” is more precise than “The recipient received the message.”

Evidential limits¶

Delivery does not prove that the message appeared on the screen. It does not prove that the intended person had possession of the device, noticed the alert or understood the content.
