How can group membership change over time?¶

A current group participant list may look definitive.

Evidential caution: that the people shown now are the same people who were present throughout the group’s history.

What this means¶

Members can join, leave, be removed, be re-added or change accounts. Invitation links may allow new users to enter without direct approval. Administrators may add or remove participants, and account identifiers may change while display names remain similar.

Some services make earlier history visible to new members; others do not. This may depend on the platform, group settings and product changes.

Consider linked devices and restored accounts. A user may regain access after reinstalling an application or restoring a backup. A replaced telephone number or reused account can complicate continuity.

Provider or organisational records may preserve historical membership even where the live application shows only the current state.

When reporting, distinguish present membership from historical membership. Avoid phrases such as “all group members received the message” unless the evidence establishes who was present and how the service handled history.

What to check or do next¶

• Preserve system messages showing joins, leaves, removals and invitations. Record timestamps, administrator actions and stable participant identifiers rather than relying only on names.
• Compare membership events with the timing of the messages under investigation. Ask who could see the content at the relevant moment, not merely who is listed now.

Evidential limits¶

A person who appears today may not have had access to earlier messages. A person who has left may still have received or retained the content sent while they were a member.
