Can one SIM be used in several devices?¶

Provider records may show the same subscription associated with different handsets.

Evidential caution: that one SIM remains permanently in one device.

What this means¶

A removable SIM can be moved between compatible devices. An eSIM profile may also be transferred, replaced or activated on another device depending on the provider and process.

This can explain why one telephone number or IMSI appears alongside several IMEIs over time.

The movement may be legitimate, such as replacing a damaged handset. It may also indicate shared use, concealment, theft or deliberate switching.

Provider records may show the SIM registering on different devices. Device evidence may show when the SIM was inserted, removed or replaced, although the available detail varies.

A rapid sequence of device changes may be significant, but it should not be interpreted without context.

In reports, separate the subscription from each handset and the user of each handset.

Where records disagree, retain the discrepancy and establish whether it reflects timing, replacement, transfer or collection method.

What to check or do next¶

• Preserve the timeline. Identify which IMEI used the SIM, when the change occurred and what communications followed.
• Look for supporting evidence: possession, location, account logins, contacts, photographs, application data and witness accounts.
• Record the source of each identifier and preserve the original records so the relationship can be tested later.
