Can synchronisation create different message states on different devices?¶

Two devices linked to the same account may show different versions of the conversation.

Evidential caution: that one display must be wrong or manipulated.

What this means¶

Synchronisation is the process by which account changes are copied between devices and the provider.

A device that is offline may retain an older message, unread status or attachment state. When it reconnects, it may receive edits, deletions, expiry instructions or new messages.

One device may therefore show original wording while another shows the edited version. A notification may preserve content that the live chat no longer displays.

Timing differences may also arise where linked devices connect at different times or use different local clocks.

In reports, explain the synchronisation context rather than presenting discrepancies as unexplained contradictions.

Where the position is unclear, compare device records, provider metadata and the account’s security history.

What to check or do next¶

• Preserve each device in its current state before reconnecting it unnecessarily. Record connectivity, time settings, application version and what each device displayed.
• Do not force devices to synchronise merely to make the records agree. The difference may itself be useful evidence.
• Compare message IDs, sequence, timestamps, edit markers, deletion notices and account-session records.
• Where possible, determine which device state came first and what event caused the later change.
