Are messaging calls recorded by default?¶
A messaging application may show that a voice or video call occurred.
Evidential caution: that the provider automatically holds a recording of the conversation.
What this means¶
Many messaging services do not create a retrievable recording of ordinary calls by default. They may retain call metadata without retaining the audio or video content.
Recording may still occur through a built-in feature, an organisational setting, a participant’s device, screen-recording software or another application.
The provider’s current behaviour, account type and configuration matter. Do not make assumptions from one platform or older practice.
Search devices, cloud storage, downloads, meeting folders and collaboration platforms for actual recording files.
A recording file requires its own provenance. Establish who created it, whether it is complete, whether it was edited and how it was obtained.
Where recording is alleged but no file is found, preserve audit logs, notification records and participant evidence that may show whether recording was started.
In reports, distinguish call metadata from actual recorded content.
Where the issue is disputed, compare account, device, recipient and provider records before drawing a conclusion.
What to check or do next¶
- Preserve any recording indicator, consent notice, file reference, meeting setting or organisational policy.
- Do not infer the conversation content from the existence of a call record alone.
- Preserve the source and collection method so another investigator can test the same interpretation.
- Preserve the source and collection method so another investigator can test the same interpretation.
Operational takeaway
Do not assume a messaging call was recorded; identify any recording feature, file or audit event separately from the call record itself.
